What with BYU officially at 10-1 and assuming Utah beats up on SDSU for an 11-0 record I have a question for you older members of the family: Has there ever been a better combined record between the two teams heading in to their matchup? Has there ever been a game with bigger implications for BOTH teams?

I’m gonna say no. I haven’t checked the records, but i’m pretty sure they’ve never come into this game with only one loss between them, unless it was way back in the day before they saved this game for last.
It’s always been a big game regardless, but usually it only had conference ramifications. Last time utah was undefeated and looking for a shot at a BCS game, BYU wasn’t all that good. Last time BYU was looking for a BCS shot, utah already had a couple of losses. we watched that one in Melissa’s basement. BYU wins in dramatic fashion, then Staley breaks his leg in the next game and BYU loses their last two.
This is pretty much the biggest. Utah win=BCS berth. BYU wins and who knows? MAYBE they could get in, but not unless Boise State loses, which is doubtful. I think the TCU game did them in though. So how does the conference tiebreaker go if BYU wins? Another 3-way tie a la 1999? Does the MWC then assign who goes to which bowl?
It would be another 3-way tie. The bowls actually go in order to pick who goes where. For example, the Las Vegas Bowl always picks first, and they don’t have to pick the champion if they don’t want to (a la 2005, when TCU won the conference, but BYU went to the Las Vegas Bowl). I believe the Poinsettia Bowl picks next, then I don’t know who.
